2021 TDG Temporary Certificates Expiry Update From Transport Canada

Due to COVID-19 and how it has disrupted the year, Transport Canada issued 6 temporary certificates following subsection 31 (2.1) of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act. 1992 (TDG Act) to ease disruptions to relevant TDG work that Canadians rely on.

Five of the six temporary certificates were set to expire on September 30, 2020 but have been extended to January 31, 2021.

One of these certificates is TDG certification. Individuals who held a valid training certification as of March 1, 2020 will be allowed to continue handling, offering for transport, or transporting dangerous goods until January 31, 2021. This means employers must ensure that all employees are trained as per the TDG Regulations and hold a valid training certificate before January 31, 2021.

Avoid disruptions to your work by renewing your TDG certificate today. Once completed, certification is valid for 3 years.

While the TDG certificate expires on January 31, 2021, the remaining four temporary certificates have been extended until December 31, 2021 (or the day it is cancelled in writing by the Minister of Transport):

  • Temporary certificate TU 0752.3: Hand sanitizer
  • Temporary certificate TU 0753.3: Canada Post Corporation authorization – Shipping hand sanitizer by air
  • Temporary certificate TU 0754.2: Transporting hand sanitizer by air
  • Temporary certificate TU 0764.1: Test samples for COVID-19

Did you know? According to Statistics Canada, in 2018 there were 464 incidents involving dangerous goods reported to Transport Canada. These incidents mainly occurred during road travel or in facilities where dangerous goods are stored, and the top three events had to do with loss of control—which means dangerous product coming into contact with the surrounding environment, including people and communities.   Like most workplace accidents, incidents like these are preventable with a mindset and commitment to workplace safety by everyone involved in handling dangerous goods. That’s why TDG certification is so important—it keeps you and your coworkers safe.

The clock is ticking to renew your TDG certification. Make sure you’re compliant by completing our TDG Online Training course today.
